Movie Review:

The second installment of Emma Thompson's super-nanny franchise sees our snaggletooth heroine return to aid another family in distress.

Set in the English countryside during World War II, the film follows Mrs Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a stressed-out mother struggling to cope with financial pressures and her three unruly children while her husband Rory (Ewan McGregor) is away.

To add to the burden, her degenerate brother-in-law Phil (Rhys Ifans) is trying to strongarm her into selling the family farm while her snooty niece and nephew, Celia (Rosie Taylor-Ritson) and Cyril Gray (Eros Vlahos), are sent from London for an indefinite stay. The cousins loathe one another and as the fighting escalates, Mrs Green is soon at breaking point.

Enter Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) the Poppinsian solution to all Mrs Green's woes. Dressed in black and wielding a magic cane, Nanny McPhee sets about whipping the family into shape through a series of life-lessons.

Written and produced by Emma Thompson, the sequel is by no means flawless but it certainly contains enough charm and well-crafted set pieces to entertain adults and children alike.

Director Susanna White has coaxed great central performances from the children and while the slapstick humour will be too puerile for most adults, the kids are bound to love it.

There's also an enjoyable fantasy feel to the film (a scene involving synchronised swimming piglets is particularly memorable), which is well balanced against heavier subtexts older kids might appreciate.

This isn't the most cohesive movie you'll ever see; aspects of the storyline feel over-cooked and Thompson's character almost feels peripheral at times, but overall it's solid family fun that's worth the admission fee.
