Movie Reviews:

When a United States Special Forces team operating in South America attempts to bust a drug-lord, a mysterious enemy known only as “Max” (Jason Patric) intercepts their military radio channel and poses as a commander, ordering an unauthorized military strike. The bombing causes mass civilian casualties. The five soldiers — Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Roque (Idris Elba), Jensen (Chris Evans), Cougar (Oscar Jaenada) and Pooch (Columbus Short) — are painted as traitors and thought to be killed during the incident, resulting in their being stranded. Whilst struggling to adapt to their new undercover lives in Bolivia, they are approached by Aisha (Zoe Saldana), a seductress who offers an opportunity to clear their names…and kill Max.

The Losers really has little to offer in terms of originality. The revenge tale has been told before, and better. A new set of circumstances does little to mask the fact that the film is glaringly derivative, resulting in overwhelming predictability. However, what the film lacks in story, it begins to make up for in character.

Each piece of this ensemble is inspiringly cast. Chris Evans plays his usual stock character: a smart-ass who’s just a tad more smart than ass — but in this case, it works. He delivers snarky one-liners all while hacking super-secure computers and expertly operating advanced weaponry. Morgan plays Franklin Clay, the group’s leader, and the one member who seems to live up to their titular nickname more often than the rest. Still, he’s fearless and competent enough to convince you that he belongs in charge. Idris Elba, known mostly for TV work, is Roque, the groups loose-cannon. His temper often gets the best of him, and he’ll turn on his friends in an instant. Pooch, the transportation specialist of the group joins Evans’ Jensen as a second source for comic relief. The last, and perhaps best cast, member of the team is Cougar, the sharp-shooting weapons expert. The least is known about his personal life, but he is also at times the most personable. Saldana serves mostly as eye-candy, but does a little bit of acting too. Her character is hard to describe, since she is about as mysterious as the elusive enemy Max.

The entire second act is dedicated mostly to just letting these characters riff off each other, which proves to be immensely entertaining. Sure, not much happens in terms of plot, but the six actors have far better chemistry than the script deserves, so focusing on them rather than the subpar plot works to the film’s benefit.

Unfortunately, the story has to get moving eventually, and the movie begins to fall apart. Nothing too egregious occurs, but the scenarios are just a bit too convenient and the hasty resolution feels lazy.

Ultimately, I’m torn on how to feel about The Losers. In one hand, there is the great cast and their fun chemistry; in the other, there’s…well…everything else. This movie can’t be described as bad, but it definitely isn’t good either.
