A young science wiz and an ambitious reporter make a connection between a popular vitamin drink and a highly infectious alien virus in this sci-fi thriller starring Gil Bellows and Isabella Rossellini. If you live in Boston, odds are you're guzzling Hydropure by the gallon; it's the latest health drink craze, and it's flying off of the shelves. Even the mayor has a taste for Hydropure. But when the mayor is assassinated and the triggerman slips reporter Ben (Bellows) evidence of a Hydropure conspiracy, the race is on to stop our species from being taken over from the inside. Convinced that something ominous is afoot after his colleague offers scientific proof that Hydropure is infecting humans with an alien virus, Ben and fellow reporter Lisa (Maxim Roy) set out on a mission to stop the virus from spreading and save the human race.

Movie Review:

The story finds a pair of Boston newspaper reporters and ex-lovers (Can you smell the tension?), Lisa (Maxim Roy) and Ben (Gil Bellows), who are tipped off to a conspiracy involving the mayor and the powerful conglomerate Whitefield Industries. It seems that both the mayor and the head of the company are insectoid aliens who are plotting to inseminate the city -- and no doubt the world -- with alien spores spread through Whitefield's bottled water products.

The closer they get to the truth, the more danger is involved, as their closest allies turn out to be undercover extraterrestrials. Luckily, Ben has something in his blood that can help stave off the invasion -- er, "infection." Is that a cure in your genes or are you just happy to see me?

Even by the low standards of Sci Fi Channel's Saturday night fare, Infected is pretty bland, with cheesy computer effects, standard-issue double-crosses and evil villains, lame attempts at "cool" semi-martial arts action sequences and even lamer attempts at humor and character development. It would've been more fun if it had gone the campy route suggested by Rosselini's insect boob scene instead of actually trying to deliver thrills (and failing).
